Rodhe's IGA is a grocery store and Ohio Lottery retailer nestled in the heart of Amish Country, and the staff knows their customers like family. So, when Rodhe's employees found out one of the tickets they sold was a $5 million winner, they couldn't wait to find out who won.
Thursday, the staff gathered around to watch as Ohio Lottery Director Pat McDonald presented the ceremonial $5 million check to Brenda Simpson. Simpson won the Top Prize Drawing for the Fabulous Fortune scratch off. She was one of 14 entries in the second chance drawing for the top prize of $250,000 a year for 20 years.
The staff had signs that spelled out $5,000,000, one number for each employee to hold in celebration of Brenda's big win.
Brenda, who received the call a few days earlier, was still in disbelief. She purchased her ticket back in 2016 and won $5,500 and an entry into the top prize drawing. She knew the drawing was coming up, but she never imagined she would win.
“I told the people I work with and they asked if I was coming to work tomorrow. I still plan to work, but I told my husband he can retire,” Simpson said. She added that she loves working with the kids, so she wants to keep teaching.
Brenda's husband, Tyrone, said he wants to take his wife on a much deserved vacation, and the couple plans to pay off their home.
The couple chose to take the annuity option prize of $250,000 a year for 20 years before taxes.
Rodhe's IGA received a $10,000 bonus for selling the top prize-winning ticket. Congratulations!
