Press Release

Please Play Responsibly

CLEVELAND – The Ohio Lottery will continue its mission to increase awareness of gambling disorders during the week of August 1 – 5 as part of Responsible Gaming Education Week.

Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW), held annually during the first full week of August, was created by the American Gaming Association (AGA) in 1998 to increase awareness of problem gambling among gaming industry employees and customers and to promote responsible gaming nationwide.

The Ohio Lottery’s efforts to educate the public about problem gambling recently received national recognition. The Lottery’s campaign won the award for “Best Problem Gambling Awareness Campaign” at the National Conference on Problem Gambling on July 1, 2011.

The public awareness campaign titled “Gambling is all fun and games, until…” was launched in conjunction with National Problem Gambling Awareness Week in March 2011.  It encourages problem gamblers to take control of their actions and refers them to the help line if they are in need of assistance.

The public awareness campaign, created by advertising agency Northlich, was made up of two TV ads, radio spots, flyers and brochures.

The Ohio Lottery was the first lottery in the U.S. to adopt the “Please Play Responsibly” campaign. The Lottery provides funds to the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) for prevention and treatment of problem gambling with training and treatment centers across Ohio.

People seeking help for themselves or a family member can call the Problem Gamblers’ Help Line at (800) 589-9966.
