Muffin and mocha bar now open in Media Center
Ohio State Lottery honors teacher who makes it cool to read

AKRON... After five years in the classroom, Claire Brown became the Media Specialist at Coventry Junior High School in Akron. Brown’s principal, Cindy McDonald, already knew that Brown was special in the classroom, but still, she was pleasantly surprised at how Brown transformed the Media Center.

“I never imagined what she had in store for our students and teachers!,” McDonald exclaims. “Our Media Center has become the highlight of our building. It is a place where students want to come and want to read.”

The Ohio State Lottery values the importance of teachers like Brown and is proud to honor her as November’s Teacher of the Month for the Akron-Canton area. Brown will receive four tickets to an upcoming Cleveland Cavaliers game, where she will be publicly recognized on the court. She will receive a prize pack of Cavaliers’ merchandise and assorted Partners in Education merchandise from the Lottery.

In Coventry’s Media Center, Brown added computers, age-appropriate books and magazines and a “reading pit” with couches and recliners. “If you didn’t know you were in a school, you’d think you had just stopped by Borders!,” McDonald says. “We even have a muffin and mocha bar!”

And students aren’t the only ones to benefit. On “Tech Tuesdays,” Brown hosts teachers who want to learn about the latest technology available for use in their classrooms. “I cannot brag enough about Miss Brown and the new life she has brought to our Media Center,” McDonald says. “You’d be shocked at what a cool place it is … for staff and for students!”
