Busy teen studies, volunteers her way to Academic All Star Award
LORAIN... Melissa Kory is a 17-year-old high school senior, so it’s a safe assumption that she leads a busy life. It’s the things she does to keep busy that have led to her being named as an Academic All Star for the Lorain Area by The Ohio State Lottery.
Melissa, who ranks first in her class at North Ridgeville High School, has won numerous academic awards, but she also volunteers much of her time in service of the Animal Protective League, Cleveland Play House and Key Club. She attends Lorain Community College as a Post Secondary Option Student and while studying at the college has received the Scholar’s Award and been named to the Dean’s List.
Typical of Melissa’s dedication is what happened last summer when she volunteered for an internship at the North Ridgeville Press. What was supposed to be a 20-hour volunteer experience turned into an entire summer volunteer experience that produced 14 published articles. “Clearly, Melissa is a talented writer who displays the maturity to work with adults and who has the follow-through to meet deadlines,” says North Ridgeville Principal Patricia Bahr, who nominated Melissa for the award. “I’m very proud of Melissa she truly meets the qualifications of the Ohio State Lottery Academic All Star Award.”
For being named an Academic All Star, Melissa receives four tickets to the Cleveland Browns game against Seattle on Nov. 4 and a prize pack of Browns’ merchandise. She will be publicly recognized during a pre-game ceremony on the field.
The Ohio State Lottery will continue to recognize Academic All Stars and Teachers of the Month throughout the school year. For more information about the program and for nomination forms, go to www.Ohiolottery.com.
