Dedicated Cornerstone Elementary student is honored
by the Ohio Lottery
WOOSTER- Melanie Carroll, a third grader at Cornerstone Elementary School, was recently named an Academic All Star by the Ohio Lottery. Cornerstone Elementary School is located in Wayne County.
Carroll was a second grade student when she was first life-lighted for a serious heart condition. Shortly afterwards, she underwent surgery for a heart transplant. She was not physically present in the classroom for a majority of the year, but remained dedicated to learning. Her love for school remained constant.
On the days she was in school, she also went to tutoring after hours. The support from classmates and instructors gave her the strength to return to school in the fall. She achieved her goal of going to third grade. Shortly after school began, she suffered a setback and had to undergo a second heart transplant operation.
She began instruction at home and returned to school in February. She is described by her teachers as a “shining star” to the entire school. Her hard work and perseverance make her a very special student. Despite her medical issues, she is able to remain dedicated to her studies and overcome any obstacles that come her way. She enjoys reading, doing math problems and writing stories.
For being recognized as an Academic All Star, Carroll will receive Partners in Education merchandise from the Ohio Lottery and recognition on the Ohio Lottery Web site.
The Ohio Lottery will continue to recognize Academic All Stars and Teachers of the Month throughout the school year. For more information about the program and for nomination forms, go to the Academic All Star links on this web site's home page.
