Ohio Lottery honors Teacher of the Month at Browns’ game
Cleveland—Sheryl Burns is a first-grade teacher, which means she’s always up for a challenge. She actually likes challenging classroom situations, even behavioral ones. That’s because she believes they stimulate her growth as a teacher.
Burns, who teaches at Raymond Elementary School in Maple Heights, is being honored for her efforts by the Ohio State Lottery, which named her the Cleveland area Teacher of the Month for September. The Teacher of the Month is part of the Lottery’s Academic All Star program, which honors teachers and students statewide.
For being recognized as Teacher of the Month, Burns received four tickets to the Cleveland Browns’ home game against Cincinnati on Sunday. In addition to a pre-game ceremony on the field and recognition on the scoreboard at the game, she will also be interviewed on the Browns’ radio network.
Tara Scott, principal at Raymond Elementary, nominated Burns for the award.
“I have an awesome staff at my school, but Sheryl stands out head and shoulders above them all,” Scott says. “I don’t want to say that she’s my only good teacher, but she consistently goes the extra mile. She has a very quiet demeanor, but she’s very powerful with the students.”
Perhaps Burns is so good at her job because she has six children of her own. “That’s very good preparation for anything,” Burns says. “Very challenging but very exciting ... just like teaching.”
Burns, a 10-year educator, has taught students from first-grade through seventh grade. “My key to teaching is to be firm but loving and to enjoy what you do. You have to remember who you’re there for. A lot of people say that, but when you live it, it makes a big difference. I just try to treat my kids out of love.”
The Ohio Lottery will continue to recognize Academic All Stars and Teachers of the Month throughout the school year. For more information about the program and for nomination forms, go to www.OhioLottery.com.
